Recognizing Ricky Biagi’s Impact at Our Y

#ForSocialResponsibility #Volunteer #ForABetterUs

Across the United States, the Y has nearly 233,000 dedicated volunteers. They play a crucial role in everything we do. The Volunteer of the Year award at the YMCA of Greenwich recognizes individuals whose dedication inspires others to share our vision for a stronger community. We are proud to honor Ricky Biagi as our 2023 Volunteer of the Year.

Ricky, owner of the local, family-run, heating and plumbing business Biagi and Sons, has been an invaluable volunteer at our Y. As a master plumber, Ricky brings not only exceptional technical skills but a deep sense of generosity and commitment to our mission. His expertise has been instrumental in maintaining and improving our Y’s facilities, ensuring that our programs run smoothly and safely.

Ricky's contributions extend well beyond typical volunteer efforts, and the following barely scratches the surface of the many ways he has supported our Y. He has led key projects such as renovating the women's locker room showers, installing a new shower on the Olympic pool deck, and implementing water sensor technology for the pool. He has also added drinking fountains throughout the facility, ensured hot water for the Diving team, and maintained the Lifeguard ice machine. Additionally, he has trained staff on Sloan lavatory fixture repairs, provided heating solutions for the childcare rooms, and managed boiler and steam generator repairs.

When asked to describe Ricky's character, Steven Lesperance, our Director of Facilities, said the following:

"Ricky doesn't search for glory; he just wants to help. As a Greenwich native, he wants to take care of the community because, growing up, the community took care of him."

What makes Ricky's work remarkable is his selflessness. Despite the significant cost savings he has generated for our Y, Ricky consistently declines any form of compensation. Instead, he redirects any potential incentives toward our various community programs.

"Whenever I work with him, I learn something new, and he pushes me to do better," Steven said. When one person commits to uplifting their community, it inspires others to contribute, creating a collective momentum that strengthens the community. Ricky’s humility and dedication to service are a shining example of the Y’s mission in action. We are deeply grateful for Ricky’s ongoing support.

When you volunteer with the Y, you become part of something larger than yourself. It's a journey where you discover new connections, purpose, and opportunities to make a meaningful difference in your community. Whether coaching youth sports, leading classes, or guiding strategic decisions, your contribution strengthens our ability to serve and support those who need it most.
