The YMCA of Greenwich is a proud provider of American Red Cross health and safety training. We offer the latest course curriculum in Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instructor, First Aid, CPR/AED (for both the Professional Rescuer and the lay responder), Connecticut Childcare, Babysitter’s Training, and more. Our course offerings are open to members and non-members.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING - FULL COURSE OFFERINGS

Our Full-Course Lifeguard Trainings are for those who are taking first time lifeguard training, or for those whose lifeguard certification is more than 30 days expired.  Must attend all dates/times.

Students will complete an ONLINE component outside of class and will attend all dates/times of the in-person skill sessions listed for their respective course. Those pursuing waterfront skills have additional training hours as noted below.

FULL COURSE Registration Fee = $525

Registration fee includes access to the online component of the training course, digital access to the required textbook, CPR breathing barrier, and Red Cross certification fee.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING - REVIEW COURSE OFFERINGS

Our Lifeguarding Review Course is an abbreviated option designed to help you refresh core skills, practice emergency team response, and complete all required testing to renew your certification for another two years.

  • Participants must hold a current Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification, or one that has expired by no more than 30 days.
  • Select sessions also offer the option to renew Waterfront Skills in addition to Lifeguarding.
  • Students must attend all dates and times of their selected session; no make-ups are permitted.
  • Registration closes 48 hours prior to the course start. Online coursework is optional for recertifying participants.

FULL COURSE Registration Fee = $375

WATERFRONT SKILLS MODULE

This course teaches lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in non-surf open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds.

Participants must have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid to participate in this module.

After successful completion of this module participants will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Waterfront Skills which is valid for 2 years and is only valid with a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE

This course trains WSI candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

The courses and presentations include Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, adult swim courses as well as the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses and more. 

Must attend all dates and all times. No make-ups for missed times.

HOW DO I ENROLL?

  • Be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the training.
  • Successfully complete the pre-course session which includes a demonstration of swimming skills at Learn-to-Swim Level 4.
  • Schedule an appointment to complete the pre-requisite swimming skills evaluation at least one full week PRIOR to the course start date to ensure you meet the prerequisites, and to gain access to the course materials so that you can complete your precourse homework assignments.

ADULT AND PEDIATRIC FIRST AID/CPR/AED

The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED r.21 program is designed to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies. The course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to give care needed to an injured or ill person when minutes matter, and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.

Register at least 48 hours in advance to complete the ONLINE course prior to attending the in-person skill session. Email instructor AReeve@gwymca.org to obtain the link for the ONLINE portion of the course.

BABYSITTERS TRAINING COURSE

This in-person course prepares youth ages 11-16 to safely and confidently care for children and infants. It includes hands-on activities, videos and discussions to develop essential real-life readiness babysitting skills. The course covers feeding, diapering, picking up and holding children, safety and emergency response. Participants receive a 10-year Babysitter's Training certificate upon completion.
