The National Cancer Institute estimates that 2 million people in the United States were diagnosed with cancer in 2024, with 40% of those cases linked to lifestyle choices. By prioritizing your health today, you can help protect your future.

Nearly 20% of new cancer cases in the U.S. are linked to excess weight and inactivity, making staying active essential for cancer prevention. At the Y, your membership unlocks access to 50+ group fitness classes designed for all activity levels and lifestyles.

In conjunction with trying our group fitness classes, educate yourself on your family's medical history and discuss it with your doctor to stay on top of screenings. Protect your skin with sunscreen daily. Most skin cancers stem from ultraviolet exposure and are largely preventable. Avoiding tobacco and limiting your alcohol consumption can also significantly lower your risk. Additionally, be proactive and get vaccinations to protect yourself against viruses known to cause certain types of cancer.

The American Association for Cancer Research estimates there are around 18 million cancer survivors in the United States living with, through, and beyond their disease. At the Y, we know how important physical activity can be while recovering from cancer. Research from Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven Health and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard's Comprehensive Cancer Center shows that people in our LIVESTRONG program experience an improved quality of life and a significant decrease in cancer-related fatigue.

At the Y, we're passionate about helping you lead a healthier, happier life. Through our programs and supportive community, we strive to empower people of all ages and activity levels.
