Redefining Recess at Hamilton Avenue Elementary
What if recess wasn’t just a break from class—but a space where every child felt included, active, and excited to play?
That’s exactly what the YMCA of Greenwich set out to do with its new Play Every Day initiative, launched this winter at Hamilton Avenue Elementary School. In partnership with Greenwich Public Schools, this program brings YMCA staff onto the playground every Monday and Friday to turn traditional recess into a time for fun, movement, and connection.
“The impact has been immediate,” said Julia Borges, Camp and Childcare Director at the YMCA of Greenwich. “From cheering on teammates to helping each other up after a fall, we see moments of growth and joy every single day.”
Each week, YMCA instructors lead engaging games and activities for the school’s fourth and fifth graders—30 minutes per grade, per visit. When it’s too cold or rainy to be outside, the fun doesn’t stop. Staff shift to indoor group games that still get hearts pumping and encourage teamwork.
“The lives we impact through play are why we do it,” added Dinero Young, Youth Sports Coordinator at the Y. “Play Every Day is about creating a space where every child, no matter their background or ability, gets to move, grow, and belong.”
The program runs through May 31, and there are already hopes to expand to more grades and schools in the near future.
This initiative is part of the YMCA’s larger mission to support youth development, promote healthy living, and foster social responsibility. By reimagining recess, the YMCA of Greenwich is helping kids build confidence, improve physical fitness, and learn important social skills—all while having a blast.
