AUGUST IS MAKE A WILL MONTH

Creating or updating your will is one of the most important steps you can take to protect the people and causes you care about. A will can help you:

  • Ensure your wishes are understood
  • Provide for loved ones and dependents
  • Name guardians for minor children
  • Create a plan for your property and assets
  • Support organizations that have made a difference in your life

Whether you are creating your first will or reviewing an existing plan, August is a meaningful time to make sure your wishes are up to date.

EXPLORE WAYS TO GIVE

There are many ways to create a lasting legacy at the YMCA of Greenwich. Explore several common options below, then speak with your attorney or financial advisor to determine which approach is right for you.

Gift in Your Will or Trust

One of the simplest and most flexible ways to support the YMCA of Greenwich is to include a gift in your will or revocable living trust.

You can designate:

  • A specific dollar amount
  • A percentage of your estate
  • Specific property or assets
  • The remainder of your estate after other commitments are fulfilled

Beneficiary Designation

You may be able to name the YMCA of Greenwich as a full or partial beneficiary of a retirement account, investment account, bank account, or life insurance policy. Beneficiary designations can often be updated without changing your will.

Retirement Assets

Retirement assets can be subject to different tax treatment when passed to heirs. Naming a charitable organization as a beneficiary may allow those assets to support your values and community.

Life Insurance

You may choose to name the YMCA of Greenwich as a beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy or transfer ownership of a policy that is no longer needed for its original purpose.

Bank or Investment Accounts

Some financial accounts allow you to designate a charitable beneficiary through a payable-on-death or transfer-on-death designation.

Endowed Gifts

An endowed gift can provide long-term support by preserving the principal of your gift while using a portion of its earnings to advance the Y’s mission.

Appreciated Securities

Giving stocks, bonds, or other appreciated securities may allow you to support the Y while potentially avoiding capital-gains taxes associated with selling the asset yourself.

Qualified Charitable Distributions

Individuals who meet applicable age and eligibility requirements may be able to make a gift directly from an IRA through a qualified charitable distribution.

Avoid stating a fixed age directly in the short tab description because federal retirement-account rules may change. Provide current details on a dedicated securities or IRA page, or ask donors to consult their advisor.

Donor-Advised Funds

Recommend a grant to the YMCA of Greenwich through your donor-advised fund. You may also be able to name the Y as a successor beneficiary of the fund.

Real Estate and Other Assets

Depending on the asset and circumstances, gifts of real estate or other property may provide meaningful support for the Y. These gifts require advance review and approval.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust may provide income to you or other beneficiaries for life or for a designated term, with the remaining assets eventually supporting the Y.

Charitable Lead Trust

A charitable lead trust provides support to the Y for a specified period before the remaining assets pass to your beneficiaries.
