Ethan Shi: Triple-Impact Competitor® of the Month

YMCA of Greenwich Aquatics Department

Some athletes stand out because of their natural talent. Others distinguish themselves through their determination, curiosity, and willingness to take on challenges that push them beyond their comfort zones. For Ethan, those qualities extend far beyond the water.

A fierce competitor, dedicated teammate, and exceptional student, Ethan has earned recognition as the YMCA of Greenwich's Triple-Impact Competitor® of the Month for his commitment to personal growth and his ability to inspire those around him.

A Competitive Spirit That Lifts Others Up

At practice, Ethan brings an attitude that coaches and teammates can count on. He arrives ready to work, approaches challenges with enthusiasm, and consistently looks for ways to improve.

But what makes Ethan stand out isn't simply his determination to become a better athlete. It's his willingness to bring his teammates along with him.

Whether tackling a difficult practice or encouraging a teammate to push through a challenging set, Ethan understands that individual improvement and team success go hand in hand. His competitive spirit helps create an environment where athletes challenge one another, work harder together, and celebrate each other's progress.

It's this combination of personal ambition and genuine support for others that makes him such a valued member of the team.

Excellence Beyond the Pool

Ethan's drive to challenge himself is just as evident in the classroom.

Despite being only a sophomore, he has already built an extraordinary academic record, particularly in mathematics. Ethan qualified for the MathCounts National Competition, an impressive achievement that places him among some of the country's most talented young math students.

By eighth grade, he had already tested out of all high school-level math courses, demonstrating an exceptional ability to master advanced concepts well ahead of the typical academic timeline.

He also earned a perfect score on the American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8), a challenging national mathematics competition designed to test students' problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning.

These accomplishments reflect more than academic ability. They demonstrate the same qualities Ethan brings to athletics: discipline, persistence, confidence, and a willingness to embrace difficult challenges.

While competitive swimming and advanced mathematics may seem like two very different pursuits, both require focus, preparation, and the determination to keep improving. Ethan has shown an impressive commitment to developing those skills in every area of his life.

Making a Triple Impact

The Triple-Impact Competitor® philosophy, developed by the Positive Coaching Alliance, recognizes athletes who make a positive difference in three important ways: by improving themselves, making their teammates better, and honoring their sport.

Ethan exemplifies these principles through his approach to training, his encouragement of fellow athletes, and his commitment to excellence both academically and athletically.

His story is also a reminder that the lessons learned through competitive sports don't end when practice is over. The ability to embrace challenges, support others, and pursue ambitious goals can shape how young athletes approach every aspect of their lives.

At the YMCA of Greenwich, we believe developing strong athletes means helping young people build the confidence, character, and determination to succeed wherever their interests take them.

Ethan is a wonderful example of that mission in action.

Congratulations, Ethan, on being named our Triple-Impact Competitor® of the Month! Your accomplishments in the classroom are remarkable, but it's the positive influence you have on your teammates and your commitment to continuous improvement that make this recognition especially meaningful.
