Healthy Living Starts With Community: The Benefit of Evidence-Based Health Initiatives

Y
YMCA of Greenwich

For many people living with a chronic disease, daily life can feel smaller than it should. Pain limits movement. Fear of falling keeps people home. Support can feel far away. At the YMCA of Greenwich, we believe health belongs to everyone, and our ever-expanding variety of evidence-based health initiatives proves it.

Programs Built on Research

Our chronic disease prevention programs are backed by research and shaped around the people who need them most.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a 12-week program for people living with, through, or beyond a cancer diagnosis. Participants rebuild physical strength while finding encouragement from others who understand the journey. Guiding every session are caring, certified instructors trained in survivorship, post-rehabilitation exercise, and supportive care.

Parkinson’s Body & Mind

Founded at the YMCA of Greenwich in 2018, the year-round Parkinson's Body & Mind program has provided a welcoming community for those living with Parkinson's to move, learn, and lean on one another. Open to members of the Y, the program gives participants unlimited access to weekly group exercise classes, lectures on the latest research, personalized assessments with a clinical therapist, and monthly support group meetings.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a gentle, low-impact way to care for both body and mind. Over 12 weeks, participants build strength and stability and find a calmer, more grounded feeling in everyday life. Our certified instructors guide each flowing movement and offer modifications so everyone feels supported. We currently offer two programs backed by research: Tai Chi for Arthritis & Diabetes Prevention, and Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention.

Enhance®Fitness

Enhance®Fitness is the newest addition to our evidence-based health initiatives at the YMCA of Greenwich. This 16-week program uses simple, easy-to-learn movements to help participants stay active at every stage of life. Each session includes a warm-up, flexibility and mobility work, strength training, and cardiovascular exercise, which together improve balance and lower the risk of falling.

Why It Matters

Greenwich's latest community health assessments point to a growing need for accessible programs that support chronic disease prevention, healthy aging, and social connection. At the YMCA of Greenwich, we are committed to meeting that need so more of our neighbors have the chance to thrive.

"I think if we're able to provide them with these programs that can help supplement them in their lives, that's probably the most important thing," said Ikechukwu Dikko, Community Health Coordinator at the YMCA of Greenwich.

The results show up in the room. Participants regularly share how much the classes have given them. Their physical health is stronger, their minds feel clearer, and their social lives are fuller. Some even say that the classes have "literally changed their lives," Dikko said.

Participants arrive as neighbors and leave as friends who look out for one another. Our building gives that connection room to grow, but our staff and members are what make it feel like home.

Open to Everyone

No barrier should stand between a neighbor and a healthier life. All programs are free for participants, and joining most programs does not require a Y membership—though many choose to become Y members because they love the community.

"It doesn't hurt to just sign up and see if you like it," Dikko said.

When the community gets the support they need to live well with chronic illness, all of us are healthier for it.

There is no place like this place. This is what the Y movement is about: strengthening our community one person, one class, and one new friendship at a time. From members to volunteers to staff, the YMCA of Greenwich helps everyone find purpose and contribute to something meaningful, continuing the cycle of care and growth that makes the Y so special.
