National Cancer Survivor Month

June is National Cancer Survivor Month, a time to honor the millions of people living with and through cancer while also recognizing the ongoing work that helps improve survivorship. There are currently 16.9 million cancer survivors in the United States. Despite the challenges, cancer survivors are resilient. This month, we celebrate all survivors, regardless of their diagnosis or how far along on their recovery journey they may be.

Cancer is a group of diseases in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and can spread to other parts of the body. Because it can affect nearly every system, its impact is often physical, emotional, and social. Survivorship care matters because treatment can leave lasting effects such as fatigue, reduced strength, pain, or fear of recurrence, and people often need ongoing support to rebuild wellness.

National Cancer Survivor Month grew out of a broader effort to celebrate survivorship, raise awareness, and support people whose lives have been changed by cancer. It is a reminder that survivorship is not a single moment. It includes recovery, follow-up care, emotional healing, and long-term health management. For many, it also means navigating life with cancer as a chronic illness, where support and healthy habits remain important long after treatment ends.

At the YMCA of Greenwich, we know how important physical activity can be while recovering from cancer. Research from the Smilow Cancer Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute shows that people in the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program experience an improved quality of life and a significant decrease in cancer-related fatigue.

This 12-week program is designed to support individuals living with, through, or beyond cancer by offering a chance to regain physical health and connect with others on a similar journey. Participants can access free or low-cost exercise routines tailored to their personal needs. Sessions are led by certified fitness instructors trained in survivorship, post-rehabilitation exercise, and supportive care.
