Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Kata Budai

Y
YMCA of Greenwich

At the YMCA of Greenwich, volunteers play an essential role in creating meaningful, joyful experiences for our members. One of those incredible volunteers is Kata Budai, a vibrant instructor who brings energy, creativity, and heart to every class she leads. From senior hoedowns and line dancing pop-ups to her signature “Katsual” workouts, Kata has quickly become a beloved part of our community.

Recently, we sat down with Kata to learn more about her journey, her passion for fitness, and what inspires her to give back.

Who are you and what is your background? What brought you to Greenwich?

“My name is Kata Budai, and I’m 26 years old. I came to the United States about a year and a half ago with a dream of creating my own dance fitness brand. I moved here through the au pair program, which brought me to Greenwich — a place that quickly became my home away from home.

Before coming to the U.S., I worked as a fitness entertainer in some of the best hotels in Spain and in Budapest, Hungary. These experiences helped me grow as an instructor and taught me how to connect with people from all over the world, something I truly enjoy every day.”

How did you get involved in fitness and dancing?

“I could dance before I could walk — literally! My passion for dance comes from my mom, who always encouraged my creativity and love for movement. My father, a well-known personal trainer in Hungary, introduced me to fitness from a very young age. I spent many of my after-school hours in the gym where he worked, watching him train clients and motivate people.

That’s where I fell in love with the idea of helping others feel stronger, healthier, and happier through movement. I guess you could say I inherited both the genes and the guts from my parents!”

What inspired you to volunteer for the YMCA of Greenwich?

“I was inspired to volunteer at the YMCA of Greenwich because of its strong sense of community and positivity. I wanted to share my passion for dance and fitness while continuing to grow as an instructor. Volunteering here gives me the opportunity to teach classes and connect with amazing people — all while working toward my dream of creating my own dance fitness brand.

The YMCA’s warm, welcoming atmosphere makes it the perfect place to give back, learn, and develop my skills.”

What has been your experience volunteering for the YMCA of Greenwich so far?

“Volunteering at the YMCA has been an incredible experience! Everyone — from the staff to the members — has been so kind and supportive. I’ve learned so much, not just about teaching, but also about teamwork, leadership, and building relationships.

I’m especially grateful to my mentor, Brandon, who has guided me since the beginning, as well as to Jodi, Linda, Dakota, Sam, and Carlos, whose photos always capture the best moments. Their encouragement and support have meant a lot to me.”

What is one of your favorite memories at the YMCA of Greenwich?

“One of my favorite memories was leading the dancers during the Country Hoedown event in January — it was such a fun and energetic experience, and I felt so proud to be part of it.

Another unforgettable moment was this September’s Cardio Katsual Night, where I was the instructor and my mentor, Brandon, was the DJ. The atmosphere was electric, and the whole night felt like a celebration of energy, teamwork, and community.”

How would you describe the feeling you have at our YMCA? How would you describe the members and staff?

“At the YMCA of Greenwich, I feel like I’m part of a family. The staff and members create such a warm, motivating environment that makes every class and event a joy to be part of. Everyone is kind, open, and passionate about health and fitness. The staff are supportive and encouraging, and the members bring amazing energy and positivity. It’s truly a place that inspires me to give my best and reminds me every day why I love what I do.”

Kata’s Impact at the Y

From senior line dancing to inclusive, high-energy fitness parties, Kata’s volunteer work embodies what the YMCA of Greenwich stands for: community, belonging, and joyful movement. Her self-created dance workout, Katsual, has become a member favorite — offered multiple times a month at no cost — and her enthusiasm continues to bring people together across generations.

We are grateful for everything Kata brings to our Y, and we can’t wait to see her continue to grow, inspire, and shine.
